A Collective Review of Small Bowel Leiomyosarcomas in Korea

Abstract
The leiomyosarcomas in small intestine are rare, and almost all cases of tumor were dia-gnosed in operating room.
But we might have a satisfactory result in the case of early detaction and surgical trea-tment.
By the reason of this, we recommended the surgical approach as a curative measure, even though the tumor is far advanced, for control of hemorrhage, alleviation of pain and relief of obstruction.
These tumors frequently undergo central necrosis, intestinal obstruction and perforation to peritoneal cavity.
One case of leiomyosarcoma in small intestine was treated at Chonbug National University Hospital and another one during author¢¥s military service. And other documents reported previously were reviewed.
1) Males were predominantly affeted, and the mean age at diagnosis was 47.8 years vary-ing from 23 to 62 years.
2) They were found in the ileum (53.8%), jejunum (30.7%) and duodenum (15.5%).
3) The most common symptoms were abdominal pain (30.4%) and palpable mass (30.4%) followed by melena, abdominal distention and fever.
4) The operative managements were segmental resection (75%) and right hemicolectomy in 1 case, tumor extirpation and O & C in 1 case.
5) The lymphatic spread was rare, but we have 6 cases (46. 1%) of lymphatic metastasis. 6) Three of 13 patients died at 3 months, 7 month¡×, and 14 months after operation, respe-ctively and 5 cases were impossible to follow-up.
